Top Dance Tips and Tricks

Dance can be a challenging form of expression. We’ve all seen someone try an intricate step and it just falls apart – to the point of hilarity.

But what can we do to ensure that our moves look clean and precise every time? In this article we will explore a few dance tips and tricks that can help.

Listen to the music

No matter what style of dance you do, listening to the music is essential. This will help you keep your beat and understand the rhythm of the song. It will also help you create a connection to the music and make your movements feel more natural.

Listening to the music can help you learn how to interpret different emotions and incorporate that into your dancing. Watching dance-heavy musicals, competitive series like “World of Dance,” and street performers can also be a great way to get inspiration for your own dancing.

It can be helpful to practice at the same time each day so that it becomes a habit. This could be when you brush your teeth or wake up, or whenever you usually go to the dance studio.

Practice in a safe environment

Everybody feels awkward at dance (even the most professional, effortless dancers). Practicing in a safe environment can help you ease into your dancing and build confidence.

Another way to practice safely is to do it at the same time each day. This helps you to form a habit and will make it more likely that you will actually do it.

Lastly, try not to compare yourself to others – everyone has their own style and strengths. Comparing yourself to someone else will only make you feel insecure and uncomfortable, which is the opposite of how you want to feel while dancing! Focus on your own performance and how you can improve.

Move at your own pace

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced dancer, it’s important to keep your pace at the right level for you. You don’t want to move too fast and end up falling off the beat, or too slow and not being able to keep up.

It’s also important to remember to smile. This helps the audience connect with you and shows that you’re having fun. It’s also a great way to keep your facial muscles from becoming too tense and looking unnatural. Be sure to keep the distance between your upper and lower teeth for a more natural look. Also, make sure to open your leading arm out into a slight pique’ before you spring into your turn.

Loosen up

Being too stiff or tense in your dance movements can make you look awkward, so be conscious of how loose your body is. Try shaking out your legs and arms before you start to dance or even just a bit before if you want to be super prepared. Then you can move at your own pace while looking cool! Match your energy to the music’s intensity to accentuate the beats and moves if the music is loud, hard and full of rhythms; slow down your movements and blend them together if the music is more sultry. You can do this by just feeling the music.

Keep your space

Space is the area in which a dancer moves. It can be a large area, like when dancing on a stage, or it can be small, such as in the corner of a room. Keeping your space is important because it helps you look more natural and confident. It can also help you feel more connected to the music and the emotions that it is expressing. If someone tries to dance near you or invites you to join them, politely turn them down and keep your space. The audience will be more interested in seeing your movements if you are not distracted by others.

Smile

Dancers need to communicate through their facial expressions as well as their movement. A smile conveys happiness and excitement, while a frown expresses sadness or disengagement.

The Rockettes blog suggested having students wiggle their eyebrows and relax their jaw muscles to encourage a more natural smile when they perform. They should also try to engage their audience with their eyes, focusing upward instead of down at their feet.

A fake smile is often obvious, so it’s important for dancers to work on being able to express genuine emotions in their dancing. This can help them feel more confident and be the best version of themselves on stage.
